Telecoms providers grant UWI students free access to websites
For Release Upon Receipt - Monday, May 11, 2020
Over the next month, tertiary level students will sit their end of year and degree awarding examinations from the comfort of their homes for the first time in the island’s history of higher education.
Starting today and running until mid-June, students at The University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus will undergo final assessments for the just concluded semester in an online or remoteprocess that has been made easier for many of them, thanks to the generosity of the island’s major telecommunications providers.
FLOW and Digicel have granted a zero rating for students who access certain websites at UWI Cave Hill on their mobile devices.
Head of Campus IT services, Keith Inniss said the agreement took effect on Thursday, May 7th, and it will apply to 15 UWI Cave Hill websites.
“So if you are using your data plan on a mobile device to access the resources that were identified, your data will not be charged,” he explained.
Principal, Professor the Most Honourable Eudine Barriteau, in expressing the campus’s appreciation of the offer, said it is testament to the strong corporate partnership between the campus and the telecoms providers, as well as a demonstration of their commitment to investing in the future of the region’s youth.
She added: “We realised from the time we left the physical classroom environment, that it would take a concerted effort to complete the semester with a high level of integrity. I am happy with what has been accomplished so far. The entire process of moving to an emergency online delivery of education from April 6 to 24 and then delivering the assessments on an online platform from May 11 until mid-June has required significant energy, skill and commitment from the campus’s dedicated employees who have risen to the task, and on behalf of The University of the West Indies, I thank them for this.”
The semester II assessments to complete the academic year are being held in an online unprecedented format due to the COVID-19 pandemic which forced the suspension of face-to-face teaching on March 17. Campus administration has assured students that the examination or assessment process, though held without an invigilator, will be fair while taking into consideration several inhibiting factors.
Summer School 2020 has also been cancelled because of COVID-19, however students who need fewer than three courses to complete their degree programme have the option of applying to The UWI Open Campus between May 4 and June 14 2020.
